  Architectural designers play an important role in the creation of buildings. They are responsible for designing the structure. They make sure it is structurally sound and meets the necessary requirements determined by the client. Like all architects, architectural designers need to obtain a certain degree of training and education before they can work in the field.
  
  

Education

• According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, most architects are required to earn a professional degree from a program accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board. Since states set their own architectural accrediting standards, a non-accredited degree may be enough in some areas. A bachelor of architecture degree will usually take five years to attain. Many design architects follow that up by earning a master's degree in a design program. Post-professional degrees are also available through many colleges, but they are usually not necessary for an architectural designer to gain or maintain employment.
  
  

Licensure

• Proper licensing is required before anyone can call themselves an architectural designer. After earning a degree, would-be architects must work in the field directly under a licensed architect's supervision. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics points out that those wishing to become architects must pass all nine divisions of the Architect Registration Examination (ARE). Each state sets its own eligibility period for completion of the ARE. Most states then require architects to take part in some type of continuing education to maintain their licenses.
  
  

Certification

• Certification with the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) is not mandatory. Many architects choose to obtain this certification in order to advance their careers. It is also a key component of becoming licensed across various states. In order to obtain this certification, your employment record and educational transcripts will be evaluated, along with professional references.
