How to Install Grab Bars Around the Bathtub
- 1). Measure the tub's length, using a tape measure. Mark the center of the tub with a grease pen on the wall.
- 2). Measure an area 33 to 36 inches above the tub floor and mark it on the wall with a grease pen.
- 3). Hold the grab bar up to the mark above the tub floor with its center on the center mark on the wall. Mark the center of each end of the grab bar with an X on the wall. The mounting hardware from the kit goes here.
- 4). Place a 3/16-inch masonry drill bit in a drill and drill a hole through the wall on each X.
- 5). Remove the 3/16-inch drill bit and place a 1 1/4-inch masonry hole bit in the drill.
- 6). Center the bit over the smaller hole and drill through the wall on both ends for the grab bar hardware.
- 7). Peel the adhesive backing off the flat portion of one fastener for one end of the grab bar.
- 8). Squirt a liberal amount of tub and tile caulk on the back of a fastener.
- 9). Insert the fastener into one hole in the wall with about ÂĽ inch of the flat area with caulk on it protruding from the wall.
- 10
Place a Phillips screwdriver on the screw in the center of the fastener. Turn the screw counterclockwise one or two turns until the fastener opens on the back and grips the backside of the wall. The fastener draws flush to the wall when the fastener opens. - 11
Turn the screw clockwise to tighten the hardware to the wall. - 12
Repeat for the other end of the grab bar. - 13
Place the grab bar over the fasteners and line up the screw holes. Place the screws in the grab bar and tighten fully, turning them clockwise. - 14
Slide the decorative caps over the ends of the grab bar with the slits pointing downward. - 15
Pull on the grab bar with great force to ensure it will hold a person's weight. - 16
Clean any debris out of the tub before use and wipe the grease marks off the wall with glass cleaner and a clean cloth.
