How to Clean Oil on Canvas Paintings
- 1). Remove the oil painting from its frame.
- 2). Use a soft brush to sweep any dust from the canvas or canvas board.
- 3). Cover the nozzle of a vacuum cleaner with a soft cloth, hold it firmly in place with an elastic band and gently rub the surface while the vacuum is running to clean a stretched canvas.
- 4). For any dirt that appears as specks or splatters, you can pour a half cup of warm water in a very clean glass dish and add in a drop or two of clear, fragrance-free mild dish detergent.
- 5). Dip a lint-free soft cloth into the water and squeeze it out completely. Wrap the cloth around your index finger and lightly dab the spot. Rubbing can cause damage to the paint, so be very gentle.
