    • 1). Navigate to the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool download page. Microsoft updates this software automatically if Windows automatic updates are enabled. Downloading the most recent version ensures that the most up-to-date tool definitions are used in the removal in case the tool was updated since the last automatic update or if automatic updates have been disabled. Because a computer is often infected by more than one virus, worm or other malware program at a time, the most recent version of the software will check for the largest number of possible infections.

    • 2). Click "Download" to download the most up-to-date version available. This will take you to an "About Your Download" page, and the program will start downloading automatically. If it does not start automatically, click "Start download" on this page.

    • 3). Select "Run" or "Save File," depending on which option is given by the browser.

    • 4). Run the downloaded file if "Save File" was selected in the previous step to extract the update files. The update will run automatically and the Malicious Software Removal Tool will start a system scan.

    • 5). Complete all steps and prompts from the Malicious Software Removal Tool once the program is running. If the program finds an infection, there may be a prompt to initiate a more detailed scan or to restart the computer to allow the program to complete system changes.
