    • 1). Back up any personal data stored on the computer. Use a blank CD or DVD, an external hard drive, or an online backup service. You will now have a copy of all of your files in case you accidentally delete a file that you wish to keep.

    • 2). Visit the Windows XP Service Pack 2 Support Tools webpage (link in the Resources section). Click the "Continue" button to initiate the download of the Windows XP Service Pack 2 Support Tools. The pack of software includes various utilities to increase the performance of the Windows XP system. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the Support Tools software suite.

    • 3). Click the Start menu in the lower left-hand corner of the Windows XP screen, and select "Run."

    • 4). Enter "Dupfinder" (without quotation marks) in the dialog box. Click "OK" to launch the Windows XP Duplicate Files Finder.

    • 5). Click the hard drive partition (e.g. C:\\) in which you wish to remove duplicate Windows XP files. You may also select a specific folder to scan, such as your "My Documents" folder. Click "Start Search" to begin the scanning process.

    • 6). Review the list of duplicate files that the service tool generates when it is finished scanning your computer. Click any of the files that you wish to remove, and drag them to your Recycle Bin. Repeat these steps any time you wish to remove duplicate Windows XP files to free up space and memory on your computer.
