How to Identify a Blooming Bush

    • 1). Examine the blooming bush's leaves for several characteristics, taking notes or pictures to make it easier to remember. Notice characteristics such as the leaf arrangement on the stem or petiole; the overall shape; the shape of the leaf tips; the shape of the leaf base near the stem; the shape of the leaf edges; and the leaf's texture.

    • 2). Examine the blooms and buds. For example, notice how the buds forms on the stems, the buds' shapes, and how the scales grow on the buds. Examine the flowers for color, petal arrangement, time of year it blooms, shape and how they grow on the stems, such as in clusters or on top of a single stalk.

    • 3). Take more pictures and make other observations as well, such as what scar the leaf leaves behind when cut off, and the texture of the stem.

    • 4). Use the pictures and observations to identify your blooming bush. A field guide or gardening book is a good place to start, but an online database or identification guide may be easier, such as those from university or county cooperative extension websites. Some sites ask questions about your shrub, narrowing down the potential shrub types based on your answers, to identify your blooming bush. Ideally, use the extension website nearest your home since it's more likely to include the blooming bush that's growing in your landscape.
