Features of a Water Lily

    • The water lily is the most easily recognized among all the aquatic plants. The plant has large, round leaves and lovely, large white or pink multi-petaled flowers that float on the surface of the water. The newer hybrids of the plant feature an even greater variety of flower colors. The water lily is a favorite plant for cultivation in either ornamental garden ponds or containers. The plants are hardy and easy to grow. The water lily prefers quiet waters like lake edges, slow flowing streams and ponds.

    Good for Water and Fish

    • Water lilies discourage the growth of algae in water---and also provide protection for the fish from the heat of summer by providing shade on the water.

    Tropical or Hardy Varieties

    • Choose tropical or hardy varieties of water lilies depending on location. The hardy varieties are highly resistant to cold and face winter very well, just as long as their water habitat does not freeze down to the level of their roots. The tropical variety can thrive in the pond all year long.

    Blooming Time

    • Water lilies are exotic plants and their beauty lies in their diligent day-blooming habit. The flowers open at 9 a.m. in the morning and close faithfully in the afternoon between 3 to 5 p.m.

Easy to Grow in Small Spaces

    • Water lilies grow just as well in tubs and large-size containers as they do in ponds or lakes. This makes them just as accessible for small gardens and patios as in large garden ponds. As long as they get up to six hours of sun every day, they are trouble free and grow vigorously.
