    • 1). Cover the work area with newspaper or a plastic bag. This will protect the surface from spilled glue.

    • 2). Wash out your tins, inside and out, and dry them completely. Remove the lid from the container and set it aside.

    • 3). Tear off a 6-inch long piece of painter's tape and mask the edge of the tin with it. The tape should go along the edge where the lid rests. Tear off more sections of tape and mask the edge until it is completely covered. If no noticeable edge is there, use a permanent marker to highlight the edge before beginning.

    • 4). Use a ruler to cut a section of paper to fit around the antique tin's base. Use a sewing tape to measure the circumference of the tin. Cut out the paper shape you need for the tin with sharp scissors.

    • 5). Pour 1/4 cup of decoupage glue into a plastic bowl you can throw away afterwards. Add two or three drops of water to the glue. Mix the glue with a handled craft sponge.

    • 6). Spread the glue over the tin's base using the glue-dipped sponge. Work in small sections. Dab the glue on the back of the paper you cut out.

    • 7). Position the wet paper over the tin, moving it around to get it even. Dab the brush in the glue again and saturate the paper with the wet sponge. Use your fingers to work the wrinkles out.

    • 8). Place the lid on a fresh section of paper. Trace it on to the paper. Cut out the tracing. Cut small vertical lines along the edge of the circle about an inch apart. These cuts will help you fit the paper on the lid.

    • 9). Brush the lid with the decoupage glue and then the back of the paper. Position the paper on the lid. Allow the lid and base to dry for two hours.

Place your papered antique lid in a prominent place like on a desk or tabletop. Add a potted flower or bouquet of newly sharpened pencils to the tin.
