How to Clean a Flooded Basement
- 1). PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE
* Do you have a sump pump in your basement? You may want to get one.
* Is your "stuff" protected? Put the stuff in the basement in rubbermaid totes. Use a brick or cement block under the corner of your basement appliances (refrigerator, freezer, washer/dryers).
* Get your basement sealed and waterproofed.
* Check and see if your homeowner or renters insurance covers flooding. - 2). REASONS A BASEMENT CAN FLOOD
* Washing machine malfunction
* Excessive rains
* Busted pipes - 3). CLEAN A BASEMENT
* Drain water with a sump pump
* Shovel mud, or push water/silt mix with an industrial broom
* Rince walls and foundation with a high pressure hose
* Dry basement with fans, open doors, etc. allow the moisture to go outside
* Mop floor with bleach/water mixture (3/4 cups bleach to one gallon water)
* Dry Charcoal can absorb those funky odors
* Dry the bottoms of your rubbermaid totes to avoid a mold - 4). OTHER THINGS TO DO
* Remove water by blotting with towels
* Wipe everything down
* Remove wet rugs
* Open drawers, luggage and closets to get more dry
* Remove fabrics - hang them up to dry at room temperature - 5). DRESS APPROPRIATELY
Depending on how high the water is, you can wear work boots or sneakers. Be comfortable. - 6). BE SMART
Don't use electrical appliances if they have been flooded. This could start a fire.
