Examining Surgical and Non-Surgical Treatments For Peyronie"s Disease

Peyronie's Disease, also commonly referred to as penile curvature, is a condition characterized by an abnormal or exaggerated curve in the penis shaft.
While surgical procedures exist to correct this condition, one unfortunate side effect is a noticeable shortening of penis length.
Here we'll take a closer look at this particular male health problem and examine a few different methods, both surgical and non-surgical, used to treat this condition.
Understanding Peyronie's Disease Peyronie's disease is the result of the formation of scar tissue in the Tunica Albuginea region of the penis.
The accumulation of this fibrous tissue acts to prevent the normal expansion of the penis during erection which ultimately results in the development of a bend or curve in the penis shaft.
While the exact causes of this condition are still not well known, it is widely believe that Peyronie's disease is caused by microvascular trauma that occurred during sexual intercourse.
Corrective Surgical Procedures The three most common corrective procedures used to treat Peyronie's disease include tissue grafts, plication surgery and penile implants.
As with all types of surgery, certain risks and dangers exist for each of these operations.
Penile Tissue Grafts This type of procedure involves the complete removal of the lump of plaque that develops on the penis due to Peyronie's Disease.
It is often recommended to patients who have large plaque deposits and severely bent penises.
In this procedure, a surgeon removes the affected part of the Tunica Albuginea and replaces the plaque with a graft material of some type.
One unfortunate side effect of this procedure is a post-operative contraction that can lead to a shortening of penis length.
Plication Surgery This type of operation is designed to reduce the length of one penis side in order to make both sides equal.
Again, while it does effectively straighten the penis, the result is the shortening of the entire penis shaft itself.
Prosthetic Penile Implants Penile implants are semi-rigid inflatable cylinders that are surgically embedded into the Corpora Cavernosa to help correct penile curvature.
While these cylinders are biocompatible in order to keep the body from rejecting the implants, there does exist a chance that they may cause impotency.
Non-Surgical Penile Curvature Corrective Devices While surgery remains the traditional method used to correct the curvature caused by Peyronie's Disease, a newer method that employs the use of a specially designed penis extender device is starting to gain mainstream acceptance.
Penis Extender Devices These corrective devices work by applying consistent, measured traction to counteract the hardening of scar tissue and straighten the penis.
The constant, permanent stretch to the cells of the penis helps to strengthen the penile tissues and reduce the likelihood of scarring that results from Peyronie's Disease.
Recently a Penis Extender Study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine confirmed that the tension forces exerted by penis extenders do effectively help reduce the curvature associated with Peyronie's disease.
The benefits of using these penis extender devices include no side effects, low cost compared to surgical procedures, and the advantage of in-home treatment without the trauma and risks of surgery.
