Cut the flat sheet so that it exceeds the mattress dimensions by an equal amount on all sides. For example, if you mattress is 4'x7' and 6" tall, the flat sheet should be cut so that it's dimensions are (4' + 7" +7") = 5'2" by (7' + 7" + 7") = 8'2". The one inch allowance will help you hem the final fitted sheet. See figure.

(Tip: Use a king bed sheet)

Next, cut squares from the corners and sew the edges together. The squares should have dimensions equal to the amount of overhang. So, using the above example, the squares would be 7"x7". Hem the sheet all over. See figure.

(Alternatively, you can fold the triangle over and sew it down to the edge.)

Cut the elastic waistband material into 4 pieces, 1' long each. Each piece will be sewn across the corners so that they serve as straps. The elastic straps will lie on the underside of the mattress and hold the fitted sheet into place. To make a snug fit, you will sew them as shown in the figure, where the elastic is stretched. See figure.

    • 4). Slip the new fitted bed sheet over your mattress and make your bed as usual. Have a good night, sleep tight, and don't let the bed bugs bite!
