Interior Decorating for Children
- Looking at interior decorating from a child's perspective will give you insight into your little one's interests and preferences. For instance, if your son wants an Asian theme for his room, and requests posters of martial artists on the walls, you may want to talk to him about enrolling in karate or tae kwon do, leading him to discover that this is a hobby he wants to pursue for years to come.
- Allowing your children to decorate other spaces in the home besides their rooms will help to make them feel included, and shows that you value their opinion. For example, if you're changing the dining room table centerpiece, ask your daughter what her favorite flowers are, or what fragrance she would like for the candles. She'll be excited about sitting down to dinner each night, so she can admire the home decor accents that she inspired.
- The older your children are, the more sophisticated their decorating choices will be. Find a way to incorporate some of the bold or eye-grabbing interior decorating options younger children may propose, as well. If your little girl thinks the living room should be hot pink, add pink pillows to the sofa to liven up the room, if it is decorated in neutral colors. If your son wants logos of his favorite sports teams featured around the house--if practical--consider making the garage into an additional playroom so that team posters and cutouts can be featured there.
