How to Get a Grant to Replace a Boiler

    • 1). Contact local heating and cooling companies and ask if they have any grants available. Heating and cooling companies sometimes give out private grants to qualified homeowners in order to market their products and assist the community. If the company doesn't offer a grant, ask if they would consider starting a grant program to which you and others could apply.

    • 2). Visit websites such as Federal Grants Wire and Grants to find heating and cooling grants applicable to boilers. Search for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) grant, Weatherization Assistance for Low-Income Persons grant and the Very Low-Income Housing Repair Loans and Grants program. Other grants may be available, but these grants have relatively stable funding as of 2010, although monies do not cover as many awards as in the past.

    • 3). Write out the grant proposal for the new boiler. The proposal should indicate the exact cost of replacing the boiler based on reasonable written estimates, the number of individuals in the home, the household income and debt ratio, when you plan to replace the boiler, and estimates regarding heating and cooling savings the new boiler would afford. Include your qualifications or affiliations, if applicable.

    • 4). Write out a personalized cover letter to accompany each grant application. Double check the name and address of the representative of the grant organization on each letter and provide your contact information.

    • 5). Mail or fax the grant proposal to the appropriate facility.
