    • 1). Turn off the power to the unit at the circuit breaker box. Pull out the fuse or flip the circuit breaker switch.

    • 2). Remove the outer casing of the external unit by unclipping the hinges or unscrewing it using a screwdriver. Run a vacuum over the coils with a soft brush attachment to prevent hurting the coils. Clear away any weeds or grass that are growing around the unit.

    • 3). Unscrew the top grille of the unit using a screwdriver. Remove the grille, and the fan inside will usually come away with it. Spray the inside of the unit with water from a hose to remove debris.

    • 4). Reassemble the outside unit and oil the lubrication points using an oil gun. Check your manual for all the lubrication points.

    • 5). Enter the central air conditioning unit closet inside the house and unclip the drain pan from the bottom of the machine. You may need to unscrew one of the clips to gain access. Lift the pan out, keeping it level to prevent spilling water. Drain the pan and put it back in place.

    • 6). Pull out the filters and inspect them for dirt. Replace dirty filters with the correct replacements.

    • 7). Remove the vent covers from each room and clean the vent covers with a vacuum. Insert a duct vacuum into the ducts while it's running to remove dust and dirt from inside.
