How to Make Drop Spindles
- 1). Flatten out your polymer clay to an even thickness of about 1/4 inch using your rolling pin. As you get close to the desired thickness, place your spacers on either side of the clay and rest the ends of the rolling pin on either spacer. This will ensure your clay is perfectly flat and uniform.
- 2). Measure the diameter of your circular cutter. This cutter can be a cookie cutter, drinking glass or any other object that will trace out a 2- to 4-inch diameter circle.
- 3). Set the compass 1- to 2-inches wide. Place the needle of the compass in the center of the clay and carefully mark out a circle with the pencil end. Do this one point at a time -- indenting the clay with the pencil, then lifting it up and indenting a few millimeters further around the circle.
- 4). Use a butter knife to cut out the circle you have marked. Be careful not to "erase" the center mark created by the compass needle.
- 5). Push the smaller end of the chopstick into the center point of the clay disk. Carefully slide the disk about 1/4 to 1/3 of the way up the chopstick shaft to make the hole the correct width.
- 6). Take the clay off the chopstick and bake it according to the manufacturer's directions. Allow it to cool completely.
- 7). Use a tack-style nail to create a guide hole for your cup hook. Hammer the nail partway into the wide end of the chopstick and then pull it back out. Make sure the nail is as close to the center of the stick as possible.
- 8). Carefully screw in the cup hook.
- 9). Slide the clay disk onto the end of the chopstick. You are now ready to spin.
