Federal Regulations on Smoke Alarms for Manufacturers

104 52

    Number, Location and Spacing

    • The number of devices required, their location and spacing are not dictated by the regulations but section 1910.164(f) does outline that the detectors must be installed in line with the manufacturer's recommendations or based on data from field experience or engineering surveys.

    Installation

    • When installing smoke detectors the employer is resposible for ensuring they are installed as instructed by the manufacturer and that they are firmly supported on a surface independent of their wires so as not to apply tension on the connections.

    Maintaining the Detectors

    • The maintenance of the detectors is the responsibility of the employer. This includes ensuring the detectors are free of dirt and dust by cleaning them on a regular bass. The employer is also responsible for testing the system and arranging for a "person knowledgeable in the operations and functions of the system" to make any sensitivity adjustments.
