How to Make a Tutu With a Ribbon Top
- 1). Measure the circumference of the waist of the person who will be wearing the tutu. Most tutus typically sit at the lower waist which is located between the waist and hips. Add 15 inches to the measurement. The additional 15 inches will help expand the waist to accommodate the tulle and tie the tutu to the waist.
- 2). Measure 5 inches inward from the end of either side of the ribbon. Mark this area with a pin. The ribbon between these two pins will hold the tulle. Lay the ribbon on a flat surface.
- 3). Hold the tape measure to the edge of the ribbon and measure downward to determine where you want the tutu to end. Double that measurement and cut the tulle the length you desire and 6 inches in width. For instance, a standard, toddler tulle measurement is 14 inches long. The length will double so the tulle is cut 6 inches wide by 28 inches long.
- 4). Work with one tulle strip at a time and start at one of the end pins. Fold the strip of tulle in half and wrap it around the ribbon strand. Hold the center loop of the ribbon up slightly and slide the long tail end of the tulle through the center loop. The ribbon will run through the center of the tulle knot.
- 5). Repeat this procedure throughout the entire ribbon strip. As the tulle knots are tightened on the ribbon strand, push them tightly next to each other.
- 6). Wrap the skirt around the waist to determine fit. If the skirt fits properly, remove the pins in the tulle and tie a knot in the ribbon on both sides. Wrap the skirt around the waist and tie the excess ribbon into a bow.
