    • 1). Begin the obituary by telling name of the deceased and his age and place of residence at the time of his death. While writing and obituary, recount the life of the deceased by explaining what they did, when and where they did it and why you believe the deceased possessed a personality worth protecting.

    • 2). Continue with the obituary by recounting the high points of the life of the deceased in chronological order. Tell a compelling story. At it's best, an obituary helps everyone who reads it mourn the loss a unique individual with a character worth protecting. Reveal positive characteristics with interesting anecdotes about the person's childhood, family, career, pastimes, career and dreams.

    • 3). Detail the joyful life of the deceased. All too often the death of a loved one leaves mourning friends and relatives mired in the on the sadness surrounding the death. But an obituary should not focus on sadness. A good obituary includes the life and joy of living that the deceased enjoyed.

    • 4). Deliver the obituary to the offices of a local newspaper.
