How to Plant the Eye of a Seed Potato
- 1). Place the seed potato on a cutting board and find the dark, slightly dimpled eyes. You can cut the seed potato in half or in fourths, but each section needs at least three eyes. Use a clean, sharp knife and cut through the potatoes at the chosen locations.
- 2). Let the cut pieces sit out in a shady area for no more than a day or two, so the raw surfaces callus over. Do not let the pieces become shriveled,
- 3). Clear an area that is in full sun and has well-draining to slightly dry soil.
- 4). Spread 2 inches of compost over a planting site and then apply a 5-10-10 or 10-20-20 granular fertilizer per the instructions on the package. Place a garden tiller at the edge of the site and set the blade depth to between 10 and 12 inches. Push the tiller over the area to work the compost and fertilizer into the soil.
- 5). Dig holes that are 1 inch deeper than the height of the sections of potatoes. Insert one piece of the seed potato into each hole with the eyes facing upward. Fill in the holes with soil and pat them lightly. Space each potato piece at 12-inch intervals.
- 6). Water the soil until it is wet to a 2- or 3-inch depth. After planting, water the soil only once per week to the same depth to prevent the potatoes from rotting.
