Black Buck

The Black Bucks raids were operation carried out in the Falklands War by the British. They aimed to bomb the runway at Port Stanley on the Falklands to deny its use to the Argentineans. What was unusual was that the bomber leading the raid would take off from the Ascension Islands, fly supported by a large number of refuelling aircraft, bomb, then return home, a sixteen hour flight time for those that went all the way.

Although the Black Buck Raids have been much criticised, the airfield was damaged sufficiently. There were multiple raids with ascending numbers, but not all reached the Falklands. Later raids would use Shrike missiles to target radar.
