How to Find Out If My Husband Claimed My Kids
- 1). Ask your husband if he has claimed the children on his taxes. If you are separated and on good terms, he will likely be honest and tell you if he has claimed the children. However, if you are not on good terms, he may not be truthful with you. If he can be truthful, though, it will save you time and effort.
- 2). Call the IRS at 800-829-1040 to ask if someone has already claimed your children. Do not ask who has claimed them because the representative will not tell you. If the representative will not tell you if your children have been claimed, ask to speak to a supervisor until you find someone who will tell you.
- 3). Visit your local IRS office to inquire. Take along the proper identification, such as your Social Security card and driver's license. Again, you will not be able to find out who claimed your children, just whether they have been claimed.
- 4). Attempt to e-file your taxes with the children claimed as dependents. If someone else has already claimed them, your return will be rejected.
