    • 1). Open Quicken Home & Business 2008. Click on "Retirement Planner," which is located in the "Planning" menu on the toolbar. Read over the page and then click on the "Next" button.

    • 2). Click on the "Edit" button located on the right. Type the name, birth date, retirement age and life expectancy for yourself and spouse. Add details about your children, if desired. Click on "Done" when you have finished and then "Next" to advance.

    • 3). Enter income data for your retirement plan. Click on the "Edit" button to add your salary details. When you have finished, click "OK," "Done" and then "Next." Repeat this for each income section. If you need to make changes, click on "Previous" and go back to the page needed.

    • 4). Fill in details about taxes and inflation. You can use Quicken's help to figure your average tax rate, if you do not know this information. Click on "Edit." To figure this rate based on your location, select "Demographic Average," choose your state from the drop-down list and input your approximate income. To use your tax return numbers, choose "Tax Returns" and supply the required figures. Click on "Done" and "Next." Quicken will have a percentage for inflation; however, you can change it with the "Edit" button. Click "Next" to continue.

    • 5). Complete the rest of the retirement planner. This includes "Savings & Investments" (and rates and return), "Homes & Assets" (present and future), "Loans & Debt" (present and future) and "Expenses" (living, adjustments, college and special). Each section has help available if you run into any questions. The help icon ( a question mark) is located on each "Edit" page on the bottom left. Click on it to access information pertaining to the exact topic you are working on. Click on "Next" for each page.

    • 6). View your retirement plan in the last section, "Results," to check your plan for problems, display outcomes of various "What if" situations, display it as a graph and get a summary of your retirement plan. You can also access it from the "Planning Center" that can be found in the "Planning" menu on the toolbar.
