- Completing your Hellforge quest in Act 4 is the easiest way to find a topaz. Five to 10 gems will drop, in addition to a random rune, when you smash Mephisto's Soulstone. The only downside to this method is that you can complete this quest only once in each difficulty level. This means that you can do this three times per character. If you are desperate for a topaz, you can create a new character and have a friend help you get to Act 4 quickly.
- The Countess is located inside the Forgotten Tower in Act 1. She drops gems more consistently than any other boss in the game. She also always drops at least one rune. Killing the Countess, creating a new game and doing it over again is a great way to find multiple topazes. You can kill the Countess an unlimited number of times, so you can make as many runes as you need.
- The Secret Cow Level is also a good place to find gems. They don't drop as frequently as if you are running the Countess, but the drop ratio is still high compared to the rest of the game. To open the Secret Cow Level, go to Tristram in Act 1 and collect Wirt's Leg. Wirt's Body is in the upper left-hand side of the map. Click on "Wirt's Body" and his leg will pop off and land on the ground. Return to town and place the leg inside your Horadric Cube alongside a tomb of town portal and hit the "Transmute" button. This will open up a portal to the Secret Cow Level.
- The Outer Steppes is just outside the Pandemonium Fortress in Act 4. The chances of finding gems here are lower than in the Secret Cow Level, but this is still a good area of the game to find them. Explore the entire area and slay all the monsters you see. Be sure to pop open all dead corpses and chests as well.
