Pour 1 cup ammonia into a clean bucket and fill with 1 gallon hot water. Wash nearby walls and hard-surfaced furniture with the diluted ammonia solution to remove odor-causing soot and ash. Rinse with a clean, damp cloth then allow the surfaces to air dry.

    • 4). Sprinkle baking soda over carpet, large rugs and upholstered furniture. Leave the baking soda on the surfaces overnight to absorb fireplace ash odor. Vacuum the next day to remove the baking soda.

    • 5). Fill a small bowl with white vinegar and place it in the room affected by fireplace ash smell. Allow the vinegar to remain in the room overnight to neutralize any remaining odor.
