    History

    • Among the monsters of Warcraft are several clans with comprehensive histories. Some of the most notable are murlocs and the scourge. Clues about these creatures' civilizations can be found throughout Azeroth in the form of written records, ancient temples and a variety of forgotten remnants.

Murlocs are a race of fish creatures with unique customs, traits and their own organized society. These tribal fish-men have only recently begun to encroach upon dry land. For this reason, relatively is known about behaviors. But be warned, players who enter their territory are quick to learn that they are highly organized and defensive of their villages.

Alternatively, the scourge's rise to power has been detailed in countless tomes and records. Lich King Ner'Zhul created the scourge by releasing a powerful, deadly and controlling plague. Humans who were afflicted by the disease quickly died and were then reborn as mindless slaves to the Lich King. The plague, originating in the Northern continent of Northrend, has quickly spread to every corner of Azeroth.

    Significance

    • Monsters are vital to the World of Warcraft. They're everywhere--dungeons, forests, cities, caves, and even soaring through the sky. Without them, many quests and some of the most challenging aspects of Warcraft would be impossible. Players will find that many quests require them to venture into the wild and slay a certain number of creatures or gather a particular item from their foes. In fact, improving one's skill against monsters is a goal that many players choose to pursue.

Azeroth's hostile creatures are especially vital in dungeons and raids. These are areas that a group of 5 to 40 players can enter and attempt to fight their way through as a team. The monsters these groups encounter are especially challenging and require each player to fight strategically with her partners. Conquering these areas and progressing to more advanced dungeons with more powerful monsters accounts for much of a player's time in World of Warcraft.

    Geography

    • Creatures in the World of Warcraft tend to live in suitable geographic locations. For example, forests are full of wolves, boars and other fitting animals. Alternatively, the lava-soaked lands of Shadowmoon Valley are largely controlled by demons. Luckily, players can use the geography to their advantage. Warlocks, who have considerable power over demons, may find Shadowmoon Valley to be especially lucrative. Any player exploring the lush plains of Nagrand may want to wield a weapon with special effects against beast type creatures. Consciously attending to a geographic location can provide invaluable information about your foes.

    Benefits

    • Warlocks, priests and hunters can greatly benefit from a few types of monsters. All three classes are able to take control of their foes in the proper situation.

Warlocks and priests are able to take control of monsters for short periods of time. Priests specialize in the control of humanoids, including other players, while warlocks have power over demons. Neither of these skills are integral to the classes' fighting style, but they can be very useful in the proper situation.

Alternatively, much of a hunter's combat revolves around his relationship with the beasts of Azeroth. These players are given the ability to tame beast creatures to fight grow stronger as a team. Unlike warlocks and priests, hunters can keep their pet for as long as they wish. An especially skilled hunter will have great knowledge of the monsters inhabiting Azeroth so that their unique strengths and abilities can be put to use at the proper time.

    Types

    • Monsters in World of Warcraft can be categorized as elite, regular, rare or boss. Each of these categorizations gives important clues regarding their strength and the reward a player can expect for victory in battle.

Elite monsters are easy to spot--their portrait will be surrounded by a golden dragon. These creatures should be avoided unless your level is significantly above theirs. Luckily, elites tend to be grouped up in dungeons and other special zones. It's unlikely that you'll bump into one on the road between towns. Because of their increased power, these creatures do award more experience and have a greater chance to drop rare gear.

Most creatures in Warcraft are considered regular monsters. They can be found anywhere from the peaceful Elwynn Forest to the darkened skies of the Blasted Lands. These creatures should be easy to defeat alone, even if they have a small level advantage. Don't expect many rewards for defeating them, but the occasional adventurer does get lucky.

Rare monsters are the least common type of foe. They can be found anywhere, and almost always drop good loot. They tend to be a little more challenging than regular creatures, but a solo adventurer can often challenge them with confidence.

Boss creatures are found in dungeons, and a few scattered places in Azeroth. These monsters are especially challenging and sometimes require groups of 40 players to defeat. In return for the effort, bosses drop some of the best items in the game.

    Effects

    • There are numerous effects and skills the monsters of Warcraft will use on their foes. Depending on the creature, players should expect to dodge lightning bolts, suffer from persisting diseases, and even get thrown from cliffs. Because of this, any adventurer would be wise to enter the wilderness prepared for the worst. Poison antidotes are vital when fighting the scourge and bugs--these creatures tend to be full of diseases which can linger on your character for hours. Also be on the lookout for monsters with mana bars beneath their name. These creatures have magic abilities that can do significant damage or draw out the battle by healing themselves. Be prepared to stun these creatures while they cast to prevent them from using their magic.

Knowing every monster and their abilities is nearly impossible because of the many different types. Instead, use common sense to predict what they might do. For example, fire creatures are likely to use fire spells. These effects can be countered by arming yourself with fire resistant gear.

    Expert Insight

    • The monsters of Azeroth are highly detailed in their art, history and behavior. While it can be tempting to kill and loot every creature as quickly as possible, try to take the time to appreciate the atmosphere of the world. Not only do these monsters provide means to attain the goal of power, but the experience of encountering new creatures can be satisfying in itself. More loot-filled monsters will be waiting for you even after you take a few minutes to read over that rustic tome dropped by a lonely scourge.
