Skin Care for Men

Skin care for men is becoming increasingly popular, and market for men's skin care products is groweing by huge margins every year. While researching this subject, I came across the following:

"Over the past five years, men's grooming time has increased to an average of 45 min. a day--compared to the average woman's 35 min," reports London's newspaper The Daily Telegraph. The increased interest in personal appearance is reflected in the growing market for skin care, hair care, personal hygiene, and fragrance products designed specifically for men, which was worth "13.6 billion [US $25 billion] last year and is expected to rise to 16.1 billion [US $29 billion] by 2008."

Most of us are familiar with the proverb 'an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". This certainly applies to taking care of our skin to protect it from sun damage and premature aging. As mentioned above men are also paying attention to skin care. And when we talk about skin care for men we are really talking about helping men to look younger longer.

The skin is the body's largest organ, measuring some 20 square feet [1.8 sq m] for an average male and 17 square feet [1.6 sq m] for an average female. It contains receptors that respond to pain, touch, and temperature. The skin is the body's first line of defense against heat, cold, and trauma, as well as against toxins, chemicals, and pollutants. Unfortunately, with harmful UV rays, increase in skin cancers, chemicals in our foods and stress from everyday life, our skin needs some extra care.

In the past it was believed that because men shave everyday, which helps exfoliate dead skin, that that was a good enough skin care regime, but not so anymore.

Besides eating healthy, getting plenty of rest, exercise and drinking lots of water, it is important for men to also have a skin care regime. A basic regime includes cleansing, toning and moisturizing in the morning as well as applying a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. Before going to bed men should follow the same routine minus the sunscreen.

With the huge array of men's skin care products available today there is no excuse for men to neglect their skin. They can even learn from the mistakes that women made. Women concentrated on their faces and forgot to take care of their necks and chests, elbows, feet etc. Now we know that skin care is not just about the face. When we take time to take care of our skin, our whole body, we actually feel better about ourselves and this translates into happier less stressful lives.

Interesting trivia:
Foods are becoming increasingly popular ingredients in cosmetics and wellness treatments. Besides chocolate, basic foodstuffs like olive oils are being used. Germany's Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung reports that "a relaxing cocoa bubble bath by candlelight, followed by a massage with an emulsion of hot cocoa and then a chocolate-fondue compress around your body," is believed by some to help prevent skin from aging. Is it true? "Although it is theoretically conceivable that cocoa extract in creams may help slow down aging, this has not been proved scientifically," says Professor Volker Steinkraus of the Institute of Dermatology in Hamburg.
