Basic Care of Thick, Dry Hair
- Avoid shampooing hair daily; instead, limit washing your hair to every 4 days. This allows the hair to breathe, build up its natural oils and limits drying the hair out. Use a shampoo suitable for your combination hair texture. A moisturizing and fortifying shampoo will replenish oil to your distressed hair and soften it, making it more controllable. Lather once or twice, rinse and blot dry, avoid rubbing or pulling the hair while wet.
- Intensive conditioning treatments are vital for rebuilding hair follicles and repairing dry, brittle hair. A moisturizing conditioner with detangling properties is the best choice for this type of hair. Distribute conditioner evenly throughout the hair, saturating the entire head from the roots to the ends for maximum benefits. Let the conditioner sit for at least 15 minutes, then rinse. A once a month hot oil treatment will treat a dry and itchy scalp; it will help restore the normal balance of oil and get rid of calcium build-up in the hair. Let your hair air dry whenever possible.
- A wide tooth comb or wide bristle rubber-based brush is recommended to comb hair out; this limits the amount of hair that sheds and breaks to create split ends. The type of brush used also helps to equally allocate oil from the root to the end of the hair. Use satin pillow cases or a satin scarf to help trap moisture in and keep your hair from becoming dryer and breaking off. When in cold climates and weather conditions, keep your hair covered at all times; cold air has the tendency to strip hair of moisture. Use heat styling products as little as possible. Too much heat damages hair. Alternatives include styles utilizing rollers or hair pins instead. Limit the use of coloring agents, perms and relaxers in your hair. There are many factors which can cause dry hair. While the texture of your hair won't change, proper basic care will give you touchable, soft hair worth running your fingers through.
