Quilt Piecing Instructions

    Materials

    • Many quilts have survived for generations--and yours can too--with the right materials. Quality fabric is the most important ingredient. Always use 100 percent cotton from a reputable manufacturer. Cotton sewing thread is important as well. New needles and a sharp pair of scissors complete the materials needed to create a quilt.

    Cutting your fabric

    • The most important way to make your quilt top turn out correctly is to measure very carefully. Use a ruler to carefully outline each patch of fabric using a sharp pencil. Alternatively, you can use a rotary cutter and mat. Careful attention to measuring and cutting the fabric ensures that quilt patches turn out uniform.

    Sewing

    • Be very careful when sewing patches into squares. If you are not confident enough in your sewing to accurately eyeball a 1/4-inch seam allowance, mark a seam line on every patch using a pencil. Carefully sew your patches together into squares, keeping the seam lines straight. Sew the squares into rows, then the rows into a quilt top.

    Take your time

    • Quilting can be a relaxing process, but rushing will not create a better product. Take your time. A quilt can be made in as little as 20 minutes a day, if that is all the time you have. Be consistent in working on your quilt regularly--every day or every week--and it will get done. Hurrying and making mistakes can cost you time in the long run, especially if you have to take out seams and do them all over again. Enjoy the process of making your quilt and the product will turn out to be something you will be proud to display.
