How to Use a Spool to Wind a Bobbin on a Sewing Machine
- 1). Disengage the up and down motion of the sewing needle. This is done on some machines by turning the outer edge of the hand wheel counterclockwise while the back edge remains stationary. Other machines may require depressing some area on the face of the hand wheel.
- 2). Place the spool of thread on the vertical or horizontal spool holder, a pin a little smaller than the diameter of the spool's hole. It is located on the top right side of most sewing machines.
- 3). Draw the cut end of the thread through a thread guide and then a small tension disc at the other end of the sewing machine. These two points are located on the top left side of most sewing machines.
- 4). Guide the thread end through the smallest hole located in the rim of the bobbin, from the inside out, leaving only an inch-long tail.
- 5). Hold onto the thread tail and press the larger central hole of the bobbin onto the bobbin winding pin. The bobbin winding pin is located on the top right side of most sewing machines next to the spool holder.
- 6). Engage the bobbin winder by sliding the pin to the left, and press the foot pedal while holding the short thread tail. Let the bobbin twist and the thread tail break.
- 7). Wind the bobbin until it is full.
- 8). Cut the thread and remove the filled bobbin.
- 9). Disengage the bobbin winder by sliding the bobbin winding pin to the right, returning it to its original position.

Re-engage the up and down motion of the sewing needle by turning the outer edge of the hand wheel clockwise while the back edge remains stationary. Other machines may require the return of a depressed area to its original position on the face of the hand wheel.
