    Availability

    • MediaSmart applications come prepackaged with many HP desktops and laptops. The current version of Microsoft's Windows Media Center comes pre-installed with most versions of Windows 7, and older versions come with some packages of Windows Vista and Windows XP. Some new computers will include both MediaSmart and Windows Media Center. Neither Microsoft nor HP offer the software independently from new computers or operating systems.

    TV

    • With additional hardware connected, both Media Center and MediaSmart users can watch live television or record broadcast television for later viewing. HP's program gives viewers instant access to several television stations, including Nickelodeon and MTV. Media Center also works with some free television stations after configuration, and newer versions include Netflix compatibility.

    Music

    • MediaSmart's basic music player allows playlist creation and burns music to CD or DVD. Media Center includes those features in addition to an Internet radio service.

    DVDs

    • The DVD playback option in MediaSmart includes a unique custom bookmarking feature, and works with Blu-ray discs. Media Center also supports Blu-ray playback. Both programs require a compatible Blu-ray disc drive.

    Photos

    • Both programs can display photographs and create slide-shows. MediaSmart includes more advanced photo editing features, while HP Snapfish integration allows photo printing directly from the MediaSmart software.

    Other Features

    • Windows Media Center can synchronize media to compatible mobile devices, such a Microsoft Zune, for use away from a computer. HP MediaSmart allows users to edit home videos using a complete video editing program that includes direct YouTube uploading.
