How to Identify a Vine With Red Berries in the Winter
- 1). Look at the size of the berries and measure them with a ruler to see how big they are. Some vines will produce red berries that are quite large, others are small. The size of the berry can be helpful in determining the identity of a vine.
- 2). Note how the berries grow. Some berries will grow singularly, whereas in others, like the climbing pyranthea, the berries grow in clusters.
- 3). Look at the leaf shape and size. Some leaves are long and skinny, whereas others are short and wide. Look at the shape of the leaf, as well. Note if the ends are pointed or round. Also look for any veining or coloring in the leaves.
- 4). Pay attention to where the vine is planted. Some vines prefer lots of sun, while others like shade instead. Knowing what conditions in which the vine grows can help you to determine its variety.
- 5). Note the size and location of the vine. Notice if the vine grows upward or if it is mainly low-lying; some vines like to attach themselves to objects and grow upward, while others prefer to stay low to the ground. In addition, pay attention to how big the vine is, whether it takes up a large area or stays relatively small.
- 6). Compile your findings and compare it to information you find in reliable sources, such as books about vines. One such book is "The Explorer's Garden: Shrubs and Vines From the Four Corners of the World." If you still cannot identify the vine you encountered, take a picture of it, along with your information, to a garden store or county extension center and ask an associate for help.
