How to Clean Old & Rusty Cast-Iron Cookware
- 1). Scrub the rust spots off your cast-iron cookware, using steel wool or fine-grit sandpaper and hot water, if needed.
- 2). Wash the entire cookware with hot, soapy water and a stiff nylon brush. Washing with soap is only acceptable before re-seasoning the cast-iron cookware.
- 3). Rinse the cookware well and dry it thoroughly with a clean, soft towel.
- 4). Rub a thin coat of vegetable oil or melted shortening to the inside and outside of the cookware.
- 5). Tear off a large sheet of aluminum foil and place it on the bottom rack of your oven. This will catch any drips from the cookware and prevent having to clean the oven.
- 6). Set the oven at about 350 degrees Fahrenheit or hotter.
- 7). Place the cast-iron cookware upside-down on the top rack of the oven. Leave the cookware in the hot oven for about one hour and turn the oven off. Let the cookware cool in the oven.
- 8). Remove the cookware from the oven and store it in a cabinet where it will stay cool and dry.
