How to Reseal Saltillo Tiles

    • 1). Measure the size of your floor. Use a tape measure and calculate the length and width of the floor you want to seal. Multiply the length times the width to compute the number of square feet.

    • 2). Purchase enough Saltillo tile sealer for a multicoat application. Read the coverage data on the back label of the sealant container. The porosity of the tile indicates the number of coats needed. Most tiles will absorb two coats. Have enough sealer on hand for three coats.

    • 3). Vacuum the floor thoroughly. This will help to remove as much surface dust and debris as possible.

    • 4). Wash the tiles by hand. Protect your knees with a soft kneeling pad and use plenty of water and a large yellow tile sponge. Begin at the furthest corner of the room and work your way to the main exit. Allow two hours for the tiles to dry thoroughly.

    • 5). Pour Saltillo tile sealer into a roller tray and begin sealing tiles in the furthest corner of the room. Use a small sealer sponge to apply sealer along the baseboard, and then switch to a paint roller. Try to cover approximately 4 square feet at a time. Work your way from left to right or right to left and finish at the room's main exit.

    • 6). Repeat the sealer application one more time to ensure a durable finish. Very porous tiles may require a third application.
