Computer Monitor Terms
In this article we discuss the different terms so that you are no longer confused.
LCD - LCD or Liquid Crystal Display monitors are the most popular available.
They are very compact and lightweight and don't use a lot of power.
You will see some monitors being called flat panel.
They are also LCD but because of their thinness they are named that way.
Plasma - Plasma display monitors are flat panel and usually come in larger sizes such as 32inc or more.
They are different from LCD although many people confuse them.
They have been criticized for having large power consumption and reflecting more light than LCD's and therefore causing glare.
CRT - CRT or Cathode Ray Tube monitors are used on older PC's and they are vey hard to find these days on new PC's.
They offer some advantages such as very high contrast ratios even higher than LCD's but their disadvantages outweigh their advantages.
They are heavy and bulky, consume a lot of power and older ones are prone to burn-in.
Widescreen - LCD and Plasma monitors have widescreen meaning they give you excellent viewing just like the movies.
When you're thinking of buying a monitor for your computer the technology behind it, is not really important for you as a consumer as long as it is not CRT you will be fine.
You will need to think more about the size and cost, but it is worth knowing what the different terms mean.
