How I Cheated in JEE and Became an IITian: The Story of an IITian
Initially the candidate had not planned on cheating when he entered the examination hall. He wasn’t carrying chits or any other instrument helpful in cheating. He never intended of doing on what he did in the entrance exam. Though, he had not prepared for IIT JEE and was totally blank. He confessed to be guilty of not managing his time more judiciously, even though he knew a lot was on the stake. When he entered the exam premises, he had chaos in his mind. He was wondering what will he do there and how will he confront his parents after attaining a report card brimming with negative scores. He entered the exam hall early. During the empty time he observed the position of seats closely. There were eight students who would sit at different angles from where he sat. As he saw them, a geeky student caught his attention. That student appeared to be very studious and a typical IIT material. When instructors started distributing the paper, he noticed that there were ten sets. The pattern followed to distribute the papers had a zig-zag but a fixed pattern. He noticed that if he received the paper from the fourth set, then his studious neighbor would have received a question paper from the sixth set. First, like a sincere student, he tried to attempt as many questions as he could answer correctly. There were very few such questions which he could answer with his own capabilities. His eyes drifted to the question paper of his neighbor, the question that seemed of similar design as one of the questions in his question paper. He also saw the answers that he had marked already. He copied his answers to as many questions, he could see in his booklet. It took him an hour to look at the questions while avoiding the being caught by the invigilators overlooking 40 candidates in a room. He was able to look at 4 out of 8 questions in Part 1 and 3 out of 4 in multiple-choice questions. Hence, he simply used the data of the questions he already had. He found the algorithm that had been used to jumble the questions and answered his paper. There were 2 paper in JEE and had been divided into three sections - Physics, Chemistry and Maths. Each subject had been further sub-divided into four parts. Algorithms for each part were different and cracking them was a very intricate task altogether. As he untangled the algorithm of the first part, it did not take me much time to straighten out the others. In both the papers, he kept following the same tactic. He also conceded to be mentally exhausted and drained that he fainted, his eyes were strained due to looking sideways continuously during the examination. But all his unethical and meaningless tactics worked. He actually won a seat at one of the Top 6 IIT’s. His All India Rank was outstanding too and within Top 3500. He is a 5-pointer at IITs and he could see the efforts 9-10 pointers put to keep up with the difficulty levels there. Perhaps, in the end of the confession he admitted that what he did was not correct. He might have actually ruined the dreams of hard working & dedicated students. Somebody’s dream was denied a seat because of the confessor. But whatever he did occurred spontaneously. None of this was pre-planned he further added.
