Zucchini require little maintenance and produce fruit prolifically from mid-summer to late-fall. They are a good choice for the beginning gardener, but require at least 3 feet of space in the vegetable garden. One or two plants provide enough zucchini for most families. Plant zucchini from seed in late spring, after all chance of frost has passed because they don't tolerate cold temperatures. Harvest zucchini when the fruits are 6 to 8 inches long. The fruits become tough and dry when allowed to grow larger.

    Compact Varieties

    • Plant compact varieties, such as Bush Baby or Raven. These plants typically grow 12 inches smaller than regular varieties, requiring less space. Their fruits may also be smaller. Look for seeds at a reputable nursery or garden center, or order them online if you can't find them locally.

    Container Plants

    • Grow zucchini in containers on a sunny patio. Select a 24-inch deep pot, according to Ohio State University, and fill it with a compost-based potting soil. Plant two seeds in the pot, but remove one seedling once the plants stand 3 inches high. Container grown plants dry out more quickly than those grown in the garden, so monitor soil moisture daily in hot weather. They also need more fertilizer. Apply a granular or water-soluble fertilizer every two to three weeks.

    Trellis

    • Build sturdy trellises out of mesh landscaping fabric or chicken wire and wood frames. Frames for zucchini must be stronger than those used for growing peas or beans, since the fruits are heavy. Tie or weave the leaves through the holes in the wire to train the zucchini plant. Tie strips of fabric to the trellis to make slings for developing fruit. Heavy zucchini fruits may rip from the plant and drop to the ground without support.
