How to Troubleshoot a Fluorescent Fixture

    • 1). Put on rubber gloves. Grab the bulb or bulbs one at a time at both ends and twist until the two pin contacts at each end slide out of the contact clamps. Note how the bulbs fit in the fixture and replace them with new bulbs. With a two-bulb fixture it is important to replace both, because the ballast is made to operate two bulbs.

    • 2). Turn on the light. If the bulbs light correctly with both replaced and do not flicker and there is no high-frequency buzz, the ballast is working correctly and you are done. If the light does not work correctly, continue with the next step.

    • 3). Deactivate the light's circuit at the breaker panel or fuse box. Remove the bulbs and set them aside.

    • 4). Use the appropriate screwdriver to remove the back reflector located behind where the bulbs usually are. This reflector also covers the ballast.

    • 5). Label the wiring going to the ballast, both on the house wiring side and the ballast side, so that you can reinstall a new ballast. Unscrew the wire nuts connecting the ballast wires. Unscrew the screws holding the end brackets of the ballast to the fixture body.

    • 6). Replace the entire ballast with a new ballast with exactly the same voltage and amperage ratings and equivalence. Matching the model number works best. Screw the new ballast in place.

    • 7). Use the wiring legend and diagram on the ballast box to mate its wires with the house wiring and twist each wire pair together with the wire nuts you took off in Step 5. Snap the back reflector over the ballast and twist the bulbs back in place.

    • 8). Re-energize the circuit and flip the switch on to test the light.
