How to Make Your Own Futon Mattress
- 1). Measure the area that the mattress will cover to get the correct size you will need. If you have an old mattress, measure it. You will need these measurements when you purchase the mattress material and the fabric to cover it in.
- 2). Purchase a piece of foam rubber to the size of your measurements. You should be able to find rolls of foam rubber at your local fabric or crafting store. It might be possible to find the size of foam you need and have it cut to size. If not, you'll have to cut it yourself. Because the foam will have to bend easily as it sits in the futon, don't purchase foam rubber that's too thick and doesn't flex easily.
- 3). Purchase the fabric that you will cover the mattress in. Remember to add an additional inch or two to the measurements to allow for seams. If you will be using the futon heavily, you should consider a heavier fabric to withstand the use. A cotton base fabric is usually easier to work with and is more durable. Talk to the fabric store employee if you have questions. She should be able to help you make the right choice for your needs.
- 4). Turn the fabric inside out, having the two pieces face each other and sew up three sides of it. Turn the fabric right side out, leaving the unfinished side open. This is where you will insert the piece of foam rubber.
- 5). Insert the foam mattress into the opening of the fabric. Fold the unfinished edge inside and pin together. Sew the remaining seam together, closing the foam rubber inside. Place the finished mattress on the futon, and you're all set.
