    • 1). Locate the adjustment screws at the ladder's sides where the ladder pivots. Some ladders have adjustment knobs that can be turned by hand instead of adjustment screws.

    • 2). Loosen the screws with your fingers or the proper adjustment tool. An Allen wrench, Phillips screwdriver or flat-head screwdriver usually does the trick.

    • 3). Spread or close the legs of the ladder to increase its stability. Follow the instructions that came with your ladder for specific adjustment operations.

    • 1). Slip the tip of a flat-head screwdriver beneath the cover rings of the ladder legs. Pry the rings up off the ladder cup holes.

    • 2). Loosen the bolt that tightens the ladder wedge with a crescent wrench. Move the wrench clockwise to loosen; counterclockwise movement tightens.

    • 3). Pull the ladder rails up and out of the cups. Clean the cups; remove all debris with a vacuum.

    • 4). Check the rubber bumpers on the end of the ladder rails that hang down in the pool. Replace them if necessary, pulling out the old bumpers and putting in the new bumpers.

    • 5). Reinstall the ladder rails into the ladder cups. Cover the cups with the cover rings on the rails, sliding them down and over the cups.

    • 6). Climb up and down the ladder steps to ensure the ladder adjustment is correct and to ensure the ladder is firmly secure.
