Spy Cameras - What Are They?

Do you know that spy cameras are just about everywhere? Can their use be legal? Where can they be hidden? How do they work?

Whether of not spy cameras are legal is a major issue just now. Existing privacy laws in the United States are pretty hazy when it comes to the legality of the installation of spy cameras. Basically put, it is against the law to place a spy camera in an area that is considered to be a private place without the written consent of those people that use that area. Notice the problem with that? What is a private place?

Legally, a private place could be considered as an area where one would expect not to be a victim of unauthorized surveillance. Eh, excuse me. To my mind that is everywhere. So really, anyone can put a spy camera just about anywhere and providing the camera is not detected, get away with it. And what chances of detection?

So what types of spy cameras are available? In fact there are really only two types - wired and wireless. As you would expect. A wired camera is one that is physically connected to a recording medium using a cable. This, of course rather restricts where it can be hidden as you have to hide the cables as well as the camera. Wireless spy cameras do not suffer from this drawback and can be placed anywhere. These spy cameras come complete with a transmitter built in with a transmission range of anything up to 50 miles and even beyond with the high end models. Included with the camera is a receiver that receives the video signal and relays it to a recording device either wirelessly or via a cable.

They are small enough to be able to be hidden just about anywhere. There are some weird and wacky places where they can be hidden, imagination is the only limit. If you can think of a place then that is where you could hide one.

What uses can spy cameras be put to? There are many uses for a spy camera. What about these? If you have a store with a cash register then a spy camera covering it would be a good idea. On a personal note, I used a spy camera in this situation. Recently I had some builders in to extend my kitchen. Like most people I had to leave them on their own while I went to work. Funny thing was I started to notice that some of my books were going missing. I had my suspicions but I could not prove anything. I decided to install a spy camera and see if my suspicions were correct. Within the first hour I caught on video a workman putting one of the ornaments I keep on my desk in their lunch pail. Using that captured video I spoke to the contractor and not only did I get all my things back but I got a few bucks knocked off my bill. Those are just some of the uses for a spy camera.

If you are thinking of getting a spy camera, check out your local privacy laws first and avoid any legal unpleasantness.
