Federal Fertilizers Act

104 48

    Nutrient Fertilizers

    • Fertilizers using major nutrients, such as nitrogen (N), potassium (K), phosphorus (P), and minor nutrients, such as calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg) and sulfur (S), are not required to register, but continue to be regulated under the Fertilizers Act.

    Micro-nutrient Fertilizers

    • Micronutrient fertilizers using boron, chlorine, copper, iron, manganese, molybdenum, or zinc must be registered and properly labeled with all nutrient claims. However, fertilizers containing micronutrients do not need to be registered if the fertilizer use is to provide P, K, and N with only small amounts of micro-nutrients, according to the Government of Manitoba.

    Fertilizer-Pesticide

    • Fertilizer-pesticide products require registration and must show the products' compliance with the "Compendium of Fertilizer Use Pesticides."

    Product Labeling

    • Proper labeling of registered products must include the registration number in the form of: Registration Number YYYYNNNX Fertilizers Act--where YYYY equals year, NNN equals the numerical value for the product, and X equals the letter value for the product type (A equals supplement, B equals micronutrient, C equals fertilizer-pesticide).

    Supplements

    • Products intended to improve the physical (organic matter) and chemical (liming materials) condition of the soil are regulated but not subject to registration; however, registration of other supplement products is required.
