    • 1). Find a convenient place to make your compost pile. A 5-by-5-foot area is sufficient for most compost piles.

    • 2). Make a compost pile by adding green lawn clippings, vegetable kitchen scraps, eggshells and coffee grounds. Also, add brown yard waste such as leaves, small branches or barnyard manure. Adding more green material than brown will help the compost process work faster.

    • 3). Mix items well and turn the compost pile again every week. You will notice the inside of the pile heating up during the composting process. That is caused from bacteria breaking down the compost.

    • 4). When compost breaks down and resembles moist soil, spread around the base of trees as far out as the tree is wide.

    • 5). Reapply as often as necessary to keep trees and plants healthy.
