Making Hydrosols
There are herbs particularly suited for making hydrosols. These aromatic choices are all easily found in the home herb garden. Here is my article on making a rose Hydrosol. The technique is the same for all of the following herbs. If you are lucky enough to have some fresh herbs available, try this cool technique!
1. Chamomile
Known for it's gentle nature, the mere scent of this lovely herb will be enough to send you or your children off to dreamland. I would recommend trying chamomile is one of my first herbs for making a hydrosol.
When harvesting your chamomile herb, you can safely use both the Blossom and leaves. Hey chamomile hydrosol is perfect to use and your baby or child's bedroom. The sweet Apple scent send anyone off to dreamland. A chamomile hydrosol is also soothing to inflamed or irritated skin.More »
2. Fennel
The black licorice sent of fennel, translates very well to a hydrosol. Fennel is a naturally sweet scented her, And you may find that your friends and family may come into a room where you have recently spritzed this scent, and although they enjoy it, they may not be able to put their finger on what they are smelling. 3. Lemon Balm
The light and lovely scent of lemon balm is both soothing and relaxing too young and old alike. Lemon balm hydrosol is the the top of the list for someone beginning to try this wonderful herbal recipe. 4. Rosemary
Rosemary is known for its memory stimulating properties. It makes a lovely hydrosol, for the very same reason. How about making a few ounces of this herbal hydrosol, and tucking one into your college-age student's gift basket from home. 5. Rose
Of course I would be remiss to not include the humble rose in this list of herbs used for hydrosol. The romantic and soothing scent of the rose cannot be duplicated, as you would find it difficult to discover anyone who didn't like the scent. What better way to remember your summer rose garden bounty, then by storing some of that gorgeous smell in a homemade hydrosol form.
6. Peppermint
Peppermint is actually one of the most medicinal of all of the Hydra stalls on this list. Peppermint is known for soothing and upset stomach, an and body. It's a good thing that Mint grows so easily in the home herb garden, because you may find yourself using quite a bit of this hydrosol. Try spritzing a bit of this peppermint hydrosol in your car when you're about to embark on a long drive. It will help keep you alert and energize you. This is also a lovely gift to include in the basket for pregnant mom. She may find the peppermint hydrosol is just the thing for her to smell when she's feeling unwell in the earlier part of her pregnancy.More »
7. Lavender
If you've been to my site over the past six years, you will recognize that I have sort of a thing lavender. Talking about hydrosols is no exception. A lavender hydrosol is a calming peaceful herbal remedy to have on hand when one is stressed or just can't seem to settle.
I like using a lavender hydrosol when I've had a very long day, and my brain is working overtime yet I have to rest. I spritz my sheets and my pillows before I make my bed, and find that the pure, clean scent lingers when I climb back into bed that evening.More »
