If you have left over scrap pieces of vegetables that you dispose of daily or weekly, then you might consider turning those pieces of left over food and vegetables into compost to make your own worm farms.
By turning your leftovers into compost for a worm farm, you will have a small version of a compost bin in your backyard while still leaving room in your yard for areas of entertainment.
What you will be needing to start work on your worm farms is the following items; you will need to have a sturdy plastic 7 inch deep container.
This container is going to be used to place your scraps into.
Keep in mind that when keeping worms and building worm farms, that the worms are considered to thrive better when being kept in the dark.
If you are using a plastic container that is clear, you will want to make sure that you wrap it up in newspaper or foil to keep the light from seeping into the container which can make the worms very unhappy.
Another thing to consider when keeping a worm farm is that you will want to make sure that the worms are kept free and clear from any vibration as the worms do not like this and will seek a new living environment when being vibrated.
When it comes to the type of worms that you will want to use for your worm farms, the most common type of worms for worm farms is the red worm.
These worms are often referred to as being red wigglers or manure worms.
You will not want to use night crawlers or earthworms as these two types of worms will not work well for your worm farms.
When making the bedding material, you will want to use some shredded up newspaper that has been moistened but not soaking wet.
You will only want to use the black and white pages of the newspaper and not the ads or glossy pages.
Most generally the classifieds will work great.
You will then want to add a few handfuls of garden soil to potting soil and add a couple of cracked egg shells to the mix as well.
Keep this bedding area wet but not to wet as this will not work well for the worms.
The moisture in the worm farm will help to let the worms breathe without drowning them.
When feeding your worm farms, you will want to start with feeding them fruit and vegetable scraps and scraps that are considered to be starches.
Such starches are considered to be bread and oatmeal as well as pasta.
If you live in the southern areas, you may want to even consider using grits.
You do not want to feed them foods that are high in acid such as citrus fruits and coffee grounds as well as tea bags.
The pH level should be kept in between 7 and 8.
If you are using coffee grounds, you can add the egg shells to the mixture to cut back on the acid of the coffee grounds.
You will want to make sure that you are using egg shells that have been cooked as this is what works best for worm farms.
When keeping the worms inside of the home, you will want to keep a lid on the container but will want to place some slots in the lid to allow oxygen to seep inside of the container which the worms will need in order to live.
Once you have done this, keep them in a dark spot and allow them to feed every couple of days as the worms do not eat more than half of their own body weight each day.
If you follow these steps when building your worm farms, you will find a great little way to save the left over food from your home and turn it into something other than just garbage.
