    Employment Outlook

    • A 2010 survey conducted by the Solar Foundation in Washington, D.C. found that companies engaged in solar energy planned to increase their workforce by 26 percent over the next year. In an overall economy where job growth is flat, solar is a fast-growing field.

    Associate Degrees In Renewable Energy

    • Associate of Applied Science degrees provide an entry-level course of study in installing and maintaining renewable energy systems. Many of these degree programs offer certificates for specific types of renewable energy systems such as solar. Courses in math, science and engineering are part of the curriculum. The City University of New York's Bronx Community College offers a two-year sustainable energy program that includes courses such as Solar Thermal Design and Installation and Math/Electricity Basics for Photovoltaics.

    Bachelor's Degrees In Renewable Energy

    • Bachelor's degrees in renewable energy focus on research, conversion, design and development. The greener aspects of electrical engineering are emphasized, such as organic biochemistry and solar meteorology. Many programs also offer internships for field experience. Renewable energy degree programs prepare graduates for energy systems sales or installation, energy resource analysts or community sustainability. The four-year Bachelor of Science program in Renewable Energy Engineering at Oregon Institute of Technology covers photovoltaics, energy management and auditing, wind power, biofuels, renewable-energy transportation systems, green building and fuel cells.

Masters Of Science Degrees In Renewable Energy

    • Master of Science degrees in renewable energy are often presented as an area of specialty within general electrical engineering degree programs. Students with master's degrees in renewable energy are prepared for careers as alternative energy systems analysts, specialists in conversions or administrators. The syllabus includes concentrated courses in scientific, architectural and economic aspects of all renewable energy systems. Graduates of renewable energy master's programs are on track for careers in academic researchers, expanding the knowledge base of solar and other forms of green energy. Some go on to pursue doctoral degrees in renewable energy. Graduate-level programs at Arizona State University's Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering include a master's degree in Solar Energy Engineering & Commercialization.
