What Types Of Timber Are Commonly Used In Commercial Joinery?

When it comes to choosing which timbers you would like to use in your next commercial joinery project, you may be wondering what kinds are actually suitable for this ancient woodworking art. There are a number of timbers that are available for joinery projects, and they can be split into two categories: softwoods (coniferous trees) and hardwoods (deciduous trees). The following is a list of some timbers that are commonly used for woodworking:

  • Birch: this species is known for being a beautiful and highly durable material, which is commonly used in decorative and furniture capacities.

  • Douglas Fir: also known as Oregon Pine, this timber is renowned for its strength and versatility. Its colour varies from hues of reddish browns to light browns.

  • European Beech: this timber is unsuitable for use in commercial joinery projects that are kept outside, but is highly wear resistant when used in furniture.

  • European Oak: this is one of the most popular species for use in joinery projects and is known for its light tan to biscuit colouring.

  • European Redwood: also known as pine, this timber is one of the most popular species for use in commercial joinery projects due to its attractive range in colouring (yellowish-brown to reddish-brown).
  • Hemlock: this species is sourced from North America and Canada and is commonly used in staircase projects.

  • Iroko: sourced from the plains of Africa, this is a very hardwearing species that actually resembles teak. Its colouring ranges from light yellow to golden browns.

  • Maple: this timber is famous for its amazing strength and straight grain, but is not suitable for use in external joinery. Its colouring ranges from an attractive cream to pale reddish brown.

  • Poplar: also known as Tulip Wood, this species is sourced from America and is known for its soft texture, and pale cream to light green colouring (often with strains of purple and black entwined).

  • Southern Yellow Pine: like the other pine species used in commercial joinery, Southern Yellow is known for its yellowish-brown to reddish-brown colouring.
