    • 1). Remove the existing ginger plant from the soil, carefully removing the entire root rhizome at the same time.

    • 2). Place the rhizome, or root, of the plant on your work surface.

    • 3). Cut the rhizome into the number of pieces you wish to propagate for new plants.

    • 4). Mix together equal amounts rotted leaf mulch and sand in a large pot or shallow pail. Bury the individual rhizomes 1/2 inch deep in the mixture.

    • 5). Fill peat pots 3/4 full of good-quality potting soil. When the rhizomes begin to appear as small plants in the mulch and sand mixture, transfer the small plants to the peat pots.

    • 6). Keep the soil moist in the peat pots and transplant to the garden when the plants begin to leaf out.
