Soap making molds comes in a variety of materials, shapes and sizes.
Whether you are buying or are going to use available items in the house, as a neophyte in soap making, you need to know what, how and where to look for these soap making molds.
Here are some tips to help you find the best molds for your soaps:
  1. Using ceramic or glass, the most available containers in the house, may give you a hard time when taking out the soap because these are not flexible containers.
These types of containers can crack or break when exposed to extreme temperatures.
  2. Best choice for soap making molds are plastic or stainless steel containers.
Plastic because they can easily be bent and some are very flexible.
Both these types of containers can sustain high heat and freezing cycles.
  3. Make sure that your plastic molds can endure high heat.
Rule of thumb: if it is microwaveable safe then it can be used as soap making molds.
  4. Check that the opening of your mold is bigger than the rest to be able to take out the soap.

  5. When choosing molds that are tubular be sure that it will be easy to remove the soap once it hardens.
  6. Use molds that are reusable and not those types which you will have to cut open to get out your soap.
This is a waste of your mold as well as your time!
  7. Be practical, small molds will be nice to use for display but not for bathing or washing use because it may just slip and go down your drain.
So better look at more practical sized molds.
  8. When looking for molds bear in mind that you cannot use them again for other purposes like candle making or for cooking food in as the lye may seep into the crevices and would be dangerous to your health.
  9. Wood would also be a good choice for molds.
  10. Molds made of silicone are another good and practical choice because it is pliable and heat resistant.
Whatever mold or design you would choose the first rule is that it should be practical and sensible and easy to manage.
