How to Eliminate Yellow Algae in Pools

    • 1). Test a sample of the infected pool's water. Ensure all chemical levels are balanced. Failure to properly balance the pool's water levels can render the algae treatment ineffective.

    • 2). Brush any areas of the swimming pool covered with algae using a pool pole with brush attachment. Brushing the algae removes its protection against the chlorine chemical, making it vulnerable to treatment.

    • 3). Set any bathing suits, pool toys, or maintenance equipment -- such as the pool pole -- into the pool water. Yellow algae aggressively clings to any material that comes into contact with the pool water. Treating articles of clothing and maintenance tools prevent the yellow algae from reinfecting the pool.

    • 4). Broadcast a triple chlorine shock treatment into the pool water. When dealing with yellow algae large amounts of shock are needed. One shock treatment typically is 1 lb. of shock per 10,000 gallons of water in the pool. Multiply the single shock treatment amount by three to determine the triple shock amount.

    • 5). Wait at least three hours for the treatment to take effect on the yellow algae. Assemble the pool's vacuum equipment and vacuum the dead yellow algae out of the pool.
