How to Change the Hard Drive in a ThinkPad R40

    • 1). Shut the ThinkPad R40 down and close the display. Remove all cables from the computer including the AC adapter, turn the R40 over and remove the battery from the cavity on the bottom.

    • 2). Position the ThinkPad R40 with the empty battery compartment facing you, and remove the Phillips-head screw from the front-right corner of the computer, next to the curved side panel.

    • 3). Place your thumbs on the seam between the side panel and the bottom of the ThinkPad R40, and use the raised edge for traction as you slide the panel out of the computer. Two Phillips-head screws attach the ThinkPad R40 hard drive to this panel.

    • 4). Remove the two Phillips-head screws from the side panel, and lift the hard drive off of the panel. Place the panel over the same part of the new hard drive, opposite the connector pins. Replace the two screws.

    • 5). Slide the new hard drive assembly into the ThinkPad R40 drive bay, and replace the bottom screw.
